10 Things That Have Happened Since Grammy Gave Us The Necklace

I've been trying to write about this for weeks and I keep overcomplicating it so I'm just going to make a list.

Grammy gave me, my sister, and my cousin matching necklaces a few months ago. They're these little clover pendants where the clover pulls apart into four tiny magnetic hearts and clicks back together.

She wrote on the card: "Hearts when you need love. Clover when you need courage.

Here's what's happened since.

1) I can't stop clicking it

The magnetic snap when the hearts click back into a clover is the most satisfying thing. My hand finds it constantly. In class, on the bus, in bed.

It's like a fidget thing except every time you click it you think about her for a second. You don't decide to. You just do.

2) I text Grammy every morning now

It started because I sent her a photo of it one day without even thinking about it. Clover side up. She sent back a clover emoji. Next morning I sent hearts. She sent back "I'm with you today sweetheart."

I've done it every morning since. Before this I texted her maybe once a month and it was always "thanks Grammy!!" after a Venmo notification.

3) Grammy doesn't push

This is the part that makes it work. She never asks what's wrong. She never turns it into a whole thing. If I text "hearts" she just says "I'm right here." If I text "clover" she says "go get them." She figured out that if she pushes I'll stop and if she waits I'll keep going.

4) My sister does it too

She sends Grammy clover before every game. Grammy sends back a voice note every time. My sister replays it in the locker room. She made me swear not to tell Grammy. Sorry.

5) My youngest cousin told her teacher that Grammy lives in her necklace

The teacher called her mom to check that Grammy was okay. She is. She just lives in a necklace now apparently.

6) Grammy cried

My mom told me. Grammy said she used to wake up every morning and check her phone and see nothing from any of us. Just a quiet kitchen and a quiet phone.

Now she gets texts from all of us before she finishes her coffee. My mom said Grammy cried when she told her about it.

7) Grammy almost only bought one

Just mine. To see if I'd even like it. Then she stood there thinking about my sister and my cousin and went back for more. If she'd only bought one it would have just been my thing.

It wouldn't have become a family thing. She said getting all of them was the best decision she ever made.

8) It doesn't break

I've showered in it, slept in it, accidentally worn it into the pool. The magnets still click perfectly. It looks the same as it did the first day. Grammy was worried we'd ruin them. We haven't.

9) Grammy was terrified to give them to us

She told my mom she almost didn't do it because she thought we'd open the boxes and wish she'd just sent money. She was so wrong. I would have worn it that same day even if it was ugly. It's from Grammy.

But also you can send it back if it doesn't work out. Grammy checked before she bought. Full refund, 30 days. She said that's what made her finally do it. There was no worst case.

10) Grammy thinks she gave us jewellery

She didn't. She gave us a reason to reach for her every morning. That's not the same thing.

I don't know how to explain it better than that. It's a necklace that clicks and somehow it changed everything.

"Gave this to my granddaughter Emma for her 16th. She CALLED me. Not a text. An actual video call to show me how she was wearing it. We talked for 20 minutes about which side she likes for different outfits. I haven't had a real conversation with her since she was 12." - Dorothy K.

"Three granddaughters: 14, 16, and 17. All completely different styles. The 14-year-old is sporty, 16 is artsy, 17 is preppy. They ALL wear these daily. First time in my life I've given the same gift to all three and had it be a hit with each one." - Margaret S.

"My 15-year-old actually posted this gift WITHOUT making fun of it. She wrote 'Grammy understood the assignment' with heart emojis. After years of my gifts becoming memes in her friend group, this one made me the 'cool grandma." - Linda M.

"My 16-year-old granddaughter hasn't taken it off in 4 months except to shower. She wears it with her soccer uniform, school clothes, homecoming dress, pajamas." - Nancy B.
